5 Ways to Finally Stop the Stress Eating |
|
Sticking to my new Lose the Dough plan is harder than I thought. While I’ve had no trouble getting to the gym, focusing on my mental health, and incorporating more fruits and veggies, stress eating is really getting in the way of my weight-loss efforts. After all, it’s pretty hard to see the scale move in the right direction when you’re downing five bowls of cereal at a time.
The source of all this stress? For the past couple of weeks, my husband and I have been trying to sublet our apartment. We live in a gorgeous loft-style apartment in the heart of South Boston, so we figured we’d have no problem renting it. But after at least 10 visits by prospective renters, and no bites, I’ve started to feel really, really stressed. |

Dips in Breast Cancer Rates Seen Most in Affluent Women |
|
FRIDAY, Feb. 19 (HealthDay News) — Breast cancer rates are declining, especially among women over 50 who have estrogen receptor-positive tumors, and now a new study narrows down the reason why.
After analyzing data on more than 350,000 women with breast cancer, Harvard researchers concluded that the decline may be linked with decreasing use of hormone replacement therapy — and that association, in turn, may explain why the decline is especially evident among white, affluent women.
Those are the very women most likely to have used hormone replacement therapy, experts said, and to have stopped using it following the July 2002 release of the results of the Women’s Health Initiative, a large national study that discovered an increased risk of breast cancer and heart disease with hormone replacement therapy.
The new study lends credence to the speculation about what’s behind the decline. “Our study provides evidence to support the idea that the observed declines are due to the changing use of hormone therapy, by showing that the declines in breast cancer rates were sharpest among those women most likely to have received hormone therapy — that is, affluent white women,” said study co-author Jarvis Chen, a research scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health. |

Pediatricians Want Redesign of Hot Dogs, Candy to Curb Kids’ Choking |
|
MONDAY, Feb. 22 (HealthDay News) — The leading group of pediatricians in the United States is pushing for a redesign of common foods such as hot dogs and candies, along with new warning labels placed on food packaging, to help curb sometimes fatal incidents of child choking.
“We know what shape, sizes and consistencies pose the greatest risk for choking in children and whenever possible food manufacturers should design foods to avoid those characteristics, or redesign existing foods when possible, to change those characteristics to reduce the choking risk,” said Dr. Gary Smith, immediate-past chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention and lead author of the organization’s new policy statement on preventing choking.
“Any food that has a cylindrical or round shape poses a risk,” he pointed out. Smith said that hot dogs were high on the list of foods that could be redesigned — perhaps the shape, although he said it would be up to the manufacturers to figure out the specifics. |

Respiratory Distress Syndrome RDS |
|
Respiratory Distress Syndrome RDS
Respiratory distress syndrome is the term used to describe the clinical manifestations of surfactant deficiency, and it is synonymous with hyaline membrane disease (HMD). RDS is seen in children less than 36 weeks old and is obviously more prevalent and more severe the younger the premature infant. Surfactant production from type 2 pneumatocytes begins at 24 weeks. Surfactant lowers the surface tension of the alveoli, and without it, the alveoli lose their compliance, collapse and have difficulty ventilating. RDS presents immediately at birth with respiratory compromise. Synthetic surfactant is now administered in the delivery room to high-risk infants and has greatly improved the survival of premature infants. |

Fewer US Women Getting Mammograms |
|
Research is often a slow, maddening search for answers where each new finding only seems to raise more questions.
This is the case with a story we told you about last month. It offers a good example of how difficult it can be to define a relationship between two events, or even prove a connection.
In this case, one event was a sudden drop in the use of hormone replacement therapy. The other, which followed, was a sharp drop in the breast cancer rate in the United States.
Many older women stopped taking hormones after a government warning in two thousand two about possible risks.
Last December a team of scientists reported that breast cancer rates fell in two thousand three. Then, last month, they reported that the breast cancer rate was still down in two thousand four. They suggested that the major cause was most likely the drop in hormone use.

Ear Care: Do-It-Yourself Wax Removal |
|
Some people's ears produce wax like busy little bees. This can be a problem even though earwax appears to serve an important purpose.
Experts say it protects and cleans the ear. It traps dirt and other matter and keep insects out. Doctors think it might also help protect against infections. And the waxy oil keeps ears from getting too dry.
So earwax is good. It even has a medical name: cerumen. And there are two kinds. Most people of European or African ancestry have the "wet" kind: thick and sticky. East Asians commonly have "dry" earwax. |

Multivitamins Urged for All Pregnant Women in Developing Countries |
|
A recent study in Tanzania found that when pregnant women took vitamins every day,
fewer babies were born too small.
Babies that weigh less than two and one-half kilograms at birth have a greater risk of dying. Those that survive are more likely to experience problems with their development. And experts say that as adults they have a higher risk of diseases including heart disease and diabetes.
The World Health Organization estimates that every year twenty million babies are born with low birth weight. Nine out of ten of them are born in developing countries. |

Unapproved Uses of Drug-Treated Heart Stents Questioned |
|
A coronary stent is a small tube that is used to treat heart patients. The tube is made of
wire mesh. Doctors place it inside an artery that has narrowed. They expand the stent to hold the walls of the artery open so blood can flow normally to the heart. If an artery is blocked, people can suffer chest pain and heart attacks.
In most cases, a stent is left permanently in place to keep the artery open after a treatment called angioplasty.
Increasingly doctors use what is called a drug-eluting stent. This kind has medicine on it that is released slowly over time. The drug is designed to prevent the creation of scar tissue in the artery. Scar tissue can cause the artery to narrow again. |

A good year for ticks, bad year for humans |
|
| | |
MASON CITY — Watch out for blood-sucking hitch-hikers if you’re walking in woods and grasslands this summer.
It looks like another good year for ticks, which can cause debilitating Lyme disease.
“It’s been a pretty good crop so far,” said Lyric Bartholomay, a professor of medical entomology and head of the Lyme Disease Surveillance program at Iowa State University.
“The ticks are out there,” said Brian Hanft, manager of environmental health service for the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health. “The trick is, how do you control them?”
Hanft said ticks are generally stopped by DEET-based repellents. He recommends a concentration of 35 percent DEET, which lasts longer than the 15 percent variety. Other tips:
If you walk in the woods or in tall grass, wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants, and tuck the pants into your socks. Light-colored clothes make it easier to see the tiny critters.

Brain |
|
For other uses of the term brain see brain disambiguation). For information on the human brain specifically, please see its article.

Comparative brain sizes
In animals, the brain, or encephalon (Greek for "in the head"), is the control center of the central nervous system. In most animals, the brain is located in the head close to the primary sensory apparatus and the mouth. While all vertebrate nervous systems have a brain, invertebrate nervous systems have either a centralized brain or collections of individual ganglia. The brain is extremely complex; the human brain contains 100 billion or more neurons, each linked to as many as 10,000 others[1]. This enormous number of interconnections enables the human brain to display intelligence.
